The traditional permanent hair colouring formulation represents the bulk of all colour used in salons and yet this standard formulation is not good for either the client, their hair or the hairdresser's own health. The problems lie with certain harsh chemicals and anyone who has had their hair coloured is well aware that these chemical services are not good for the hair’s condition. Since 1987 Daniel Field and his research team have been continously developing alternatives to unsafe chemical colouring products. Daniel remains the world leader in gentler, less harmful but highly effective hair colouring products. Safety and purity that far exceeds standard professional salon products Traditional hair colourants rely on the standard chemicals including, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia and ammonium persulphate salts. We have modified or replaced these with harmless alternatives. Hair damage from hair colouring need no longer be a concern. With our hair colouring products and methods there is no longer a need to compromise. Ammonia Some hair colourants still use ammonia. If you hair colour contains ammonia chances are you and your hairdresser will experience the volatile fumes given off. This can irritate hairdresser's lungs and can cause stinging to eyes and surrounding mucous membranes. Ammonia is very alkaline but the hair in it's natural healthy state is acidic. One of the purposes of using an alkaline is to swell the hair, which allows hair dye to penetrate. Unfortunately this effect also causes the hair to become swollen, rougher, weaker, dryer and over-porous. Colour molecules can easily fall out and cause colour fading. An alkaline lifts the delicate cuticle layers and when ammonia is used it can easily cause excessive cuticle abrasion that permanently effects the hair's ability to shine. Ammonia is also a powerful skin irritant as the skin is also acidic in its healthy natural state. Hydrogen Peroxide The activator responsible for all hair lightening, both in a tint formulation and in a bleach formulation contains oxygen. Hydrogen Peroxide is the most effective but can cause hair breakage, brittleness and scalp irritation just on its own. When ammonia and hydrogen peroxide are mixed together oxidation is rapidly increased. Hair lightens far faster and this can easily affect the hair's overall tensile strength and condition. As the inner cortex becomes excessively swollen, it becomes weaker, split ends become even more evident, bounce and elasticity are markedly reduced and breakage is common place. Together these two chemicals are common skin sensitisers that readily cause damage to the skin of the scalp and can cause both premature baldness and unnecessary thinning of the hair, particularly where it is naturally less dense such as around the temple area and in rarer cases through the top and crown areas. Persulphate Salts A standard high-lift tint mixed with high strength peroxide can lighten the hair about five shades but when higher lifting is required ammoniated bleach is used instead mixed with Hydrogen Peroxide. This formulation gives off a powerful odour and fumes can effect clients and hairdresser's lungs and eyes. The bleach itself is made with Ammonium Persulphate salts which increase both the alkalinity and available oxygen, boosting both the speed and degree of colour removal significantly. In doing so, the damage to the hair both cuticle layers and cortex is increased and breakage is common place. How do we care for your hair when colouring? Our world class breakthroughs include: The Water Colour Range Water Colour can be used to gently blend away grey hair and lasts 4 to six weeks or it can provide a blanket grey coverage and lasts like a permanent tint, as required. Water Colour does not lift the natural colour, it simply adds colour, without scalp irritation, any hair damage or increased processing times. Water Colour contains no ammonia or indeed replacements as it works in a completely different way. No need to add peroxide, we just add warm water. Daniel Field created 46 shades in 1994 and Water Colour still remains a world class breakthrough, as the only harmless yet highly effective hair colouring for grey hair on the market. The Fruitoxy Colouring System The Fruitoxy Colouring System is our alternative to the standard permanent hair dye and peroxide mixture and comes in every shade imaginable. The ammonia has been replaced with an alkaline derived from coconut fatty acids. This is an odourless material that gives off no fumes so it will not irritate hairdressers lungs or cause stinging to eyes or surrounding mucous membranes. In it's natural healthy state hair is acidic and this alkaline oil respects this. Just our pH Restoring Rinse following the colour will restore the acid pH without the permanent scalp and hair damage associated with chemicals like ammonia. The activator or developer responsible for all hair lightening used both in tint and bleach formulations is hydrogen peroxide which as you may know causes hair damage. We have created a new activator Fruit Oxy Booster which we use in our Fruitoxy Colouring System. It is harmless and does not cause hair damage or scalp irritation. It is made from a combination of natural essential fatty acids derived from fruit oils, chemically similar to sebum found naturally in the scalp. It is still technically a hydrogen peroxide but unlike traditional hydrogen peroxide it is in fact good for both hair and scalp. We find it protects the scalp whilst deeply moisturising the hair during the colouring process often leaving the hair better than before colouring.
